Tamarindo Condos and Tamarindo hill Houses

This is a closer view of yesterday's scene, taken with a zoom lens. The white building is the Pacific Park condo. I would prefer that they had used an earth tone that does not stand out so much. You can see that some people like to have houses up on the hills to get a nice view of the ocean, although they cannot walk to the beach.

The radio tower on the top of the hill is a nice place from which to watch the sunset over the bay, and tourists can take ATV tours up there.

The tan colored building on the left are the condo buildings at the Diria Resort complex right on the middle of Tamarindo beach. One of our two condos is on the fourth floor of that building. It is very popular with guests who want to be in the middle of town and to have access to the amenities of a resort.

Main Part of Tamarindo Town

This is a view from Langosta towards to the main part of Tamarindo.

You can see that with the boom of condo development beginning about 10 years ago, Tamarindo has developed a little of what one might call a skyline. Fortunately, there are still lots of trees. Development controls now require that every development near the beach leave half of the land in vegetation.

Langosta Beach Crystal Sands Condo Entrance

Before leaving the Crystal Sands condo, I took this look back and photographed the entrance. This is what a real estate salesperson would describe as curb appeal. Anyone driving through the gate and pulling up to this entrance will understand that this is a very nice, and expensive place.

Tamarindo Beach Heaven for Travellers and Surfers.

Maybe tourism destination of Playa Tamarindo is still unfamiliar to you. But we will share with you as a whole. Playa Tamarindo is a town which is located in the Northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Playa Tamarindo is kind of district with more than four hundreds residents. During special holidays, the district is full with tourists – visitors from all over the world to spend their leisure. The main attractions served by the district are surfing spot and eco-tourism. Along white sandy beaches offer up-scaling panorama as far as the eye can see. Follow our review below.

A glance review of Palaya Tamarindo based on lonelyplanet.com
Tamarindo has long been on the radar of jet-setting surfers. In the immortal classic Endless Summer II, Patrick and Wingnut stopped here to visit their buddy Robert August (who still leaves here), though in recent years Tamarindo is playing host to a different breed of traveler.

Today, the beach is full of blubbery North American and European holidaymakers who spend most of their time frying in the sun like beached whales. After their complexion darkens from a pasty white to a rosy shade of skin cancer, they spend a little time perusing the town’s eclectic mix of tourist shops, tourist restaurants, tourist bars and tourist cafés. And then it hits them – ‘This place is booming! Let’s buy some property here!’

Dead Tree at Langosta Beach

Yesterday I talked about how beachfront trees at times will be damaged or die because of the salt air. This is a closer view of the tree that was visible in yesterday's photo.

The dead trees have a rather artistic shape and can make for interesting driftwood. Someone has added a chair swing to this tree.

Langosta Beach Front View

This is a view from the penthouse balcony down to the beach. The Crystal Sands Condo has a nice lawn overlooking the beach, but I guess they figured that people would rather sit with their feet in the sand, so they made a couple of sand boxes with lounge chairs.

At the center top of the photo is a dead tree. I wonder if someone killed the tree to make a better view of the ocean. Some people in our condo building would prefer there there is less vegetation on the beach, but our property management company has quite properly said that they will not touch the trees on the public property of the beach. The Costa Rican environmental authorities have threatened to penalize anyone who who damages the beach trees.

The vegetation along the beach at times is damaged naturally by the salt air and water. The trees can be fragile because they are growing in sand.

Greenery at Langosta Beach

Here is another view of Langosta beach from the Crystal Sands Condo penthouse balcony. The lush greenery comes very close to the beach, and you can see some red flowers in bloom on the tree tops.

I visited the Crystal Sands Condo twice, once at low tide and once at high tide. If you look at the photo of the hot tub on the balcony compared to the same scene visible in this photo, you can see the large difference between low tide and high tide.

In Market of Tamarindo

We took a small boat across the estuary today into the town of Tamarindo
. We were immediately bombarded by street vendors that were all trying to sell jewellery, pottery or clay whistles. This man stopped us outside the back machine (what a coincident) and started showing us his pottery. He continued to unpack almost every piece from his heavy backpack. We ended up purchases a few pieces from him (I don't know if it was because of guilt, or if it was because they were all so unique or beautiful). We each ended up with a sugar bowl with lid, plus Heather bought a candle holder and I bought a beautiful bowl. I purchased a few more things that I will have to leave a secret (my kids will be reading this).

View out to Sea Langosta Beach

If you own or rent a condo on a high floor of the Crystal Sands condo, this is your view of a part of Langosta Beach, out to sea.

This view of the ocean gives me an opportunity to mention that there is an article in the newspaper about a 56 year old German woman, Renate Herberger, who is swimming the entire 1,000 km (600 miles) length of the Costa Rican coast of the Pacific Ocean.

The Road to Tamarindo Kai Surfs

Tamarindo Beach

Kai MacMahon had lost himself to the urban life in NYC, taking up running but putting down the surfboard. That is, until recently when he bit the bullet and flew himself to Costa Rica to drive, sleep and surf wherever he damn well pleased. All this week, Kai will share his experiences on the beaches and the breaks, and how he made it happen.

Touching down at Liberia Airport in northern Costa Rica was somewhat of an adventure in itself. The terminal itself is modest (OK, it’s a shack), and although there’s a shiny new terminal built and waiting to open, when I arrived they were still waiting for the paperwork to be complete [Ed note: the new terminal finally opens this Thursday!].

Within 30 minutes or so I’d gone through immigration (and some sort of weird security check where they scanned my bags as they came in to the country…why would they do that?), and was on the way to pick up my rental car. A word on this: driving in Costa Rica is not for the faint of heart. It’s not that drivers here are bad; certainly they’re no worse than you find in New York City. It’s just that the roads are—how to put it—somewhat unpredictable. You have to assume that there’s a horse in the road around every corner, because in many cases, there is in fact a horse in the road just around the corner.

Overview of Tamarindo from 5 years ago

Tamarindo in the last 5 years. I took this in December 2005 during a sunset ATV tour of the hills behind Tamarindo. This photo was taken from about the same location as yesterday's photo.

You will note that looking out to the San Francisco point that divides Tamarindo, on the right, from Playa Langosta, there are no condos peaking above the tree line. Today, there is the big white condo in the middle of town, and several new 7-story condos in Playa Langosta, including one on the ocean near the point. I will show more of them during the next couple of days.

Shopping Center Horse Statue in Tamarindo

I think these shopping center horses also qualify as a statue for my series on statues in Tamarindo. This is a little cafe at the entrance to the Plaza Conchal Shopping Center in the center of Tamarindo.

I never really thought of tiny Tamarindo as having very many statues until I started to think of photos for the May 1 theme day of statues. I now realize that Tamarindo has more statues than it does paved streets!

Aerial view of Tamarindo

This aerial photo gives an excellent overview of Tamarindo. The Tamarindo Beach beach is at the right. In the distance at the top of the photo is Langosta beach, which is a residential area.

This photo also shows the growth of Tamarindo with the construction of new and taller hi-rise condominiums in the last 5 years. Those buildings enable people who live or stay in the condos to have a view of the ocean even if they are located a block or so back from the ocean, although the buildings also block the views of the ocean for others and they add density and height to the views of Tamarindo, as you can see in this photo.

Italian Restaurant in Tamarindo

This is a photo of a new Italian rstaurant in Tamarindo. It is called El Lugarcito, which means "small place" in Italian.

The owner is a charming and friendly man named Zeno. He is from Torino, or Turin, Italy. He was named after Saint Zeno, or the Basilica San Zemo, the large church in Verona, Italy. I have never been to Turin, but I have been to the Basilica San Zemo in Verona. It is beautiful.

La Baula Restaurant in Tamarindo

This is a photo of La Baula, a popular restaurant in Tamarindo. They have excellent pizza. Like most restaurants in Tamarindo, even those serving gourmet food, the dining area of the restaurant is open air.

Tamarindo beach Sunset

Here is an example of a Tamarindo Beach sunset.

In addition to the colors softly painted on the clouds, you can see the silhouette of the fishing boats moored in the bay, and the reflection of the colors in the slowly receding water on the gentle slope of the beach at low tide.

Sunset at Tamarindo Beach

The brilliant sky of the sun setting into the Pacific off Tamarindo. You can see why they sometimes refer to the area around Tamarindo as Costa Rica's "Gold Coast."

La Tortuga Ocean View Penthouse Tamarindo Beach

La Tortuga is 1200 square feet ocean view penthouse with 2 bedrooms. It sleeps 5 guests. The master bedroom has a king size bed. The guest bedroom has a queen size bed. There is also a sleeper sofa in the living room. The bedrooms have access to full bathrooms.

View beautiful sunrises and sunsets from the ocean view penthouse level of Sunrise Condominiums. Look down on a beautifully designed pool. Cross the street and SURF'S UP! Beautiful sandy beaches welcome you.

As your surfing skills improve, go just around the bend to Playa Grande to catch even better waves or take a trip to Witch's Rock with a local surf company. If you are not into surfing, do not worry. There is a golf course just minutes away or fabulous tours can be booked through local tour companies daily. Test your nerves on the many Canopy Tours offered where you will soar through the trees like monkeys.

Horizontes del Mar Langosta Beach

Spectacular brand new Beachfront condo, approx 2000 sq ft, 3 bedroom, 3 bath, corner penthouse with incredible ocean view, large rooftop deck, with beach front swimming pool, located in Playa Langosta, the most exclusive residential area and beach in Tamarindo.

Have a Rest on Tamarindo Beach

People seem to like beach photos, so I will show one more beach photo before moving on to another subject. Walking along the beach or listening to the waves and breathing the ocean breezes can make one tired, I guess, so why not grab a book or a magazine and relax and perhaps have a little snooze under a shade tree along the beach?

These lounge chairs are part of the grounds of the Capitan Suizo Resort, which is at southern part of Tamarindo Beach. It is about halfway between our condo on Langosta Beach and our condo at the Diria Resort in the middle of Tamarindo Beach.

Driftwood at Langosta

This driftwood is in sand that is exposed at low tide in the mouth of the Langosta estuary. I do not know whether this driftwood was carried in from the ocean or floated down the estuary. Its weight must have caused it to stand upright as the tide receded, which made for a better composition for this photo.

Langosta Beach Vegetation Costa Rica

One of the things I love about Langosta beach where one of our 2 condos is located is that we can walk up and down the beach and see nothing but surf, sand, sky, plants, and driftwood. No buildings or people are visible.

There are some houses behind the trees that line the beach, but you have to look straight inland to see them, otherwise the vegetation is think enough to block the view of them.

In the future I will show some photos of the beachfront houses. Some of them are spectacular.

Naxos Condo Tamarindo Costa Rica

Most of the condos in Tamarindo are small garden condo complexes, such as our Langosta condo that is four stories tall, with a total of 20 condos. There are a few tall condos, however, such as the Naxos building shown in this photo.

The taller condos are somewhat controversial, however, as they extend above the trees and are visible from a distance. The height, of course, enables owners and renters to have a view of the ocean even if the condos are set back from the beach.

Country road to Tamarindo Costa Rica

People who inquire about renting one of our condos often ask about the roads in Costa Rica. The road to Tamarindo is paved and in fine shape.

There is only one paved road into Tamarindo, and there are lots of country roads in the area that are unpaved. This photo is a typical scene of a country road near Tamarindo.

Tamarindo Costa Rica Fishing

Playa Tamarindo, or Tamarindo Beach, as it is popularly known, is located on the northwestern Pacific coast of the province of Guanacaste, and offers a great variety of services as well as easy accessibility. Tamarindo is physically situated in a large bay with white sand beaches and fantastic surf, and is bordered by two salt water estuaries and the Las Baulas national park. Getting here is easy: Tamarindo has an airstrip with daily scheduled service: only a 45 minute flight from San Jose, on Sansa or Nature Air airlines. The Daniel Obduber International Airport in Liberia is less than an hour's drive away.

Hilton Garden Inn at the Liberia Airport

Several years ago this Hilton Garden Inn opened up across the street from the Liberia Airport. I am sure that it is used by all of the airplane crews. Before this opened, the nearest upscale accommodations would be at beach resorts about 45 minutes away.

Some of the departing flights to the USA leave as early as 7:00 am, so some tourists prefer to go to this hotel the evening before departure so that they do not have to make an early morning drive to the airport.

Fishing in Tamarindo Costa Rica

Tamarindo fishing in the northern corner of Costa Rica is well known as some of the hottest fishing spot in Guanacaste province. Tamarindo
is one of the main sports fishing destination in Costa Rica. Situated on the Pacific Coast, Tamarindo
is close to deep water and highly productive fishing grounds making Tamarindo one of the best places in Costa Rica for sport fishing. Our full fishing days and half day sport fishing charters for outstanding year-round action with Sailfish, Marlin, Tuna, Dorado, Wahoo, Roosterfish, big Cubera snapper and others species.

Shopping in Tamarindo Costa Rica

Tamarindo is awash in souvenir stands, art galleries, jewelry stores, and clothing boutiques. The new Garden Plaza shopping center is located near the entrance to town, and has several high-end shops, as well as a massive and modern Automercado supermarket.

Sports in Tamarindo Beach Costa Rica

Sportfishing: Tamarindo one of the best place to fish all year long: marlin, salifish, roosterfish, or yellow fin tuna.

Golf: Two wonderfull golf courses: Hacienda Pinilla and Melia Conchal, 15 minutes from our Hotel.

Surf: Enjoy the mythical surf spots close from Tamarindo, such as: Witch's Rock, Ollie's Point, Playa Negra, Playa Avellanas and Playa Grande

Diving: Dive with sharks, manta ray, and more, to Catalina Islands.

Also, tennis, canopy, snorkeling, yoga, gymnasium and more.

Tamarindo Weather Averages in February

When talking about the weather in Tamarindo, heat and sunshine are likely to be the two words you here most often.

Located just nine degrees above the equator in a dry, tropical forest and with its own microclimate, there is very little variation in the scorching hot weather that is seen throughout the year.

Playa Tamarindo Costa Rica

While Playa Tamarindo offers world-class shopping, dining, and coastal amusements, budget travelers might find themselves priced out (when I traveled there in college, I grocery shopped and cooked in a communal kitchen). But Tamarindo’s natural perks make the splurge worth it — on the beautiful beaches adjacent to Tamarindo, giant leatherback turtles (and other types) annually clamber ashore to lay their eggs.

Costa Rican Cigars

This is a photo of cigars on sale at the duty free shop in the Liberia airport. There are street vendors in Tamarindo who sell cigars, which I assume are Cuban cigars, as they are available throughout Latin America but not the USA.
