Closer View of Modern Beachfront Mansion

This photo shows a closer view of the beach front house that I have shown during the past two days. This photo shows the challenge of having so much glass facing west towards the beach and ocean.

The views of the ocean must be great, but the afternoon sun pouring through all that glass must be brutal on the furnishings and on the need for air conditioning.

You can see that in this photo the curtains are closed, which of course blocks the view of the ocean.

Modern Breachfront Mansion

In contrast to the intricate details of the Moroccan themed house that I showed this past week, here are the clean lines of the modern house two doors away. This is the view from the beach of the same house that what behind the gate that I showed yesterday.

One of the first questions that people wonder about houses is, understandably, "How much does it cost?" Three years ago this house was for sale and I posted a photo of it with a link to a real estate listing when the house was up for sale. It was listed for $1.8 million, which impressed me as a very reasonable price for a beachfront mansion with 10,233 sq. ft (931 sq. m.).

The house has 3 guest quarters, 2 with kitchens, in addition to a main house with 3 bedrooms and 3.5 baths. The building at the lower level closest to the beach (where I was standing when I took this photo) is an exercise room, and there is an infinity edge swimming pool.

JW Marriott Guanacaste Resort Tamarindo Costa Rica

The J.W. Marriott Guanacaste Resort. This is an aerial view of it taken by my younger son several years ago when he took a gyrocopter flight over Tamarindo.

We can walk down the beach from Tamarindo to the location of this resort, if it is low tide across the mouth of the Langosta Estuary. It is about 20 minutes to drive inland and around the estuary and surrounding rural communities.

We have never stayed here, of course, since we have condos nearby, but we have stayed at other J.W. Marriott Hotels and they are very nice. The fact that Marriott would make the investment to build a resort of this quality and size very close to Tamarindo I think is a good thing, as it places sort of an international corporate seal of approval on our local area.

Tamarindo beach at low tide

I love the glassy surface of Tamarindo beach at low tide, as shown in this photo. Tamarindo beach is different than the beaches of Southern California, Hawaii, or the East Coast with which I was familiar from living in those locations.

On most beaches, the slope is too great and the water recedes too quickly to get watery reflections in the water. As you can see in this photo, Tamarindo beach is so gradual in slope that the coutours of Cabo Velas across the bay is reflected in the glistening sheen of the ocean water remaining on the sand.

Imagine this same location at high tide. You could wade all the way out on this beach to the spot where the waves are breaking, and still be in water below your waist.

The Solitary Sailboat at Tamarindo Estuary

The solitary sailboat in this photo was parked, or I guess I should say anchored, just off the beach at the mouth of the Tamarindo estuary. The estuary flowing to the sea is the water in the foreground.

I don't know if the people in this sailboat are locals’ folks who were just out to enjoy the day, or whether they stopped for a rest while on a longer journey. I do know that they picked a delightful place to stop and enjoy the beach

The Road to Tamarindo Kai Surfs

Touching down at Liberia Airport in northern Costa Rica was somewhat of an adventure in itself. The terminal itself is modest (OK, it’s a shack), and although there’s a shiny new terminal built and waiting to open, when I arrived they were still waiting for the paperwork to be complete [Ed note: the new terminal finally opens this Thursday!].

Within 30 minutes or so I’d gone through immigration (and some sort of weird security check where they scanned my bags as they came in to the country…why would they do that?), and was on the way to pick up my rental car. A word on this: driving in Costa Rica is not for the faint of heart. It’s not that drivers here are bad; certainly they’re no worse than you find in New York City. It’s just that the roads are—how to put it—somewhat unpredictable. You have to assume that there’s a horse in the road around every corner, because in many cases, there is in fact a horse in the road just around the corner.

Sunset Cruise Tamarindo Costa Rica

This sail boat makes nightly sunset cruises from Tamarindo. The views from the water of the town, beaches, shoreline, and surrounding hills in the late afternoon light are delightful.

The staff serves a variety of food and drink, including slices of fresh fruit that are refreshing on a warm day. (And, yes, tourists from the USA and Canada can eat fresh fruit and drink tap water in Costa Rica with no problems. Costa Rica also uses the same electricity as the USA.)

Overview of Tamarindo from 5 years ago

Tamarindo in the last 5 years. I took this in December 2005 during a sunset ATV tour of the hills behind Tamarindo. This photo was taken from about the same location as yesterday's photo.

You will note that looking out to the San Francisco point that divides Tamarindo, on the right, from Playa Langosta, there are no condos peaking above the tree line. Today, there is the big white condo in the middle of town, and several new 7-story condos in Playa Langosta, including one on the ocean near the point. I will show more of them during the next couple of days.

This aerial photo gives an excellent overview of Tamarindo. The Tamarindo Beach beach is at the right. In the distance at the top of the photo is Langosta beach, which is a residential area.

This photo also shows the growth of Tamarindo with the construction of new and taller hi-rise condominiums in the last 5 years. Those buildings enable people who live or stay in the condos to have a view of the ocean even if they are located a block or so back from the ocean, although the buildings also block the views of the ocean for others and they add density and height to the views of Tamarindo, as you can see in this photo.

In addition to the colors softly painted on the clouds, you can see the silhouette of the fishing boats moored in the bay, and the reflection of the colors in the slowly receding water on the gentle slope of the beach at low tide.

As your surfing skills improve, go just around the bend to Playa Grande to catch even better waves or take a trip to Witch's Rock with a local surf company. If you are not into surfing, do not worry. There is a golf course just minutes away or fabulous tours can be booked through local tour companies daily. Test your nerves on the many Canopy Tours offered where you will soar through the trees like monkeys.

Have a Rest on Tamarindo Beach

People seem to like beach photos, so I will show one more beach photo before moving on to another subject. Walking along the beach or listening to the waves and breathing the ocean breezes can make one tired, I guess, so why not grab a book or a magazine and relax and perhaps have a little snooze under a shade tree along the beach?

These lounge chairs are part of the grounds of the Capitan Suizo Resort, which is at southern part of Tamarindo Beach. It is about halfway between our condo on Langosta Beach and our condo at the Diria Resort in the middle of Tamarindo Beach.

Playa Tamarindo, or Tamarindo Beach, as it is popularly known, is located on the northwestern Pacific coast of the province of Guanacaste, and offers a great variety of services as well as easy accessibility. Tamarindo is physically situated in a large bay with white sand beaches and fantastic surf, and is bordered by two salt water estuaries and the Las Baulas national park. Getting here is easy: Tamarindo has an airstrip with daily scheduled service: only a 45 minute flight from San Jose, on Sansa or Nature Air airlines. Alongside our Langosta condo there is a path to the beach from the road. You can see the ocean at the end of this path.

The path and landscaping was installed by the company that built our condo, which is the same company that owns the Tamarindo Diria Resort, which is the largest resort in the area.
